The society celebrates the life and works of James MacLaren (1853 – 1890), a Scottish architect who was at the forefront of the Arts and Crafts movement, designed outstanding buildings in Scotland, London and the Canary Islands, and was a major influence on Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Sir Robert Lorimer.
